SUMMARY:Military History Book Club – July 2026
DESCRIPTION:Prestonwood CC\, 15909 Preston Road\, Dallas\, TX. \nPlease arrive by 7:30 am to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $15. \nDiscussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThomas Woloszyn – Colonel Tom Woloszyn\, USA\, Ret. retired after a 30-year Army career and recently retired from the Department of the Army where his last assignment was the Civilian Deputy of Dugway Proving Ground\, Utah. Tom is a specialist in Nuclear\, Chemical\, Biological weapons Radiological Defense officer and an Army strategist. \nThere are many books on the Iraq war and on WMD-type issues\, but this is the first to offer a historical overview of chemical-biological defense issues and a policy analysis of how the U. S. government addresses the threat of weapons of mass destruction and how ground forces deal with the problem on the battlefield. Al Mauroni looks at how the 9/11 disaster forced the Department of Defense to review its management of chemical\, biological\, radiological\, and nuclear (CBRN) defense equipment and then make significant changes. He outlines in detail the government’s decision to invade Afghanistan and Iraq and search for WMDs. The fact that no such weapons were found\, the author explains\, has had dramatic consequences for how U.S. military forces address the use of nuclear\, biological\, and chemical weapons in Iraq and how they support the federal response to terrorist incidents involving these weapons at home. \nMauroni draws on two decades of experience in the area of chemical-biological defense policy to present this comprehensive analysis of the decision-making process within the Department of Defense and the actions of U.S. forces in the second Iraq War. Explaining that WMD is no longer a useful term for the threat faced by military leaders and emergency professionals\, he also outlines a number of lessons learned from the conflicts in the Middle East and offers recommendations on how to improve CBRN defense for the future. This book is published with the cooperation of the Association of the United States Army. of the invasion plan and its subsequent execution from D-Day in March 2003 until the change of command of operations in Iraq and the departure of Third Army in June 2003. \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com \n \n  \nPurchase Book on Amazon:

In 2025 it was selected as the Best Single Program in AFA and today includes 15 AFJROTC detachments in the Dallas area\, covering 24 high schools.  By this summer we’ll have awarded approximately $125\,000 in scholarships since the program started. This year we were joined by the AFA Fort Worth Chapter\, led by Chapter President Dave Dietsch.  The program is supported by the family of Congressman Johnson and Congressman Keith Self\, his successor as Texas representative from the 3rd Congressional District. \nThis year eight cadets were selected to receive a $3000 scholarship and one of them was selected by our Scholarship Committee to receive an additional $10\,000.\n$13\,000 Scholarship Winner\nToluwabori Owosho – Ryan HS \n$3\,000 Scholarship WInners\nCornelious Carey – Cedar Hill HS\nAlexander Gunnels – Forney HS\nZechariah Harris – Arlington ISD\nChase Molina – Marcus HS\nRodney Patterson – Wylie HS\nLandry Rambo – Arlington ISD\nDerek Rubio – Guyer HS \n  \nYouth Leadership Conference \nFor the past 11 years the Sam Johnson Chapter has co-sponsored with the Military Order of the World Wars\, the Youth Leadership Conference Program.  The chapter provides $300 scholarships to high school students to attend five-day\, four-night resident summer conferences at four locations across the State\, focusing on free enterprise\, patriotism\, and leadership fundamentals.  In 2026 we provided five scholarships to this outstanding course and we’ll recognize these students \nTexas A&M University\nBryan Li – St Marks\nGrace Grant – Marcus HS\nLucas Herrera – St Marks\nTexas Wesleyan University \nBrayden McMillian – Lamar HS\nMounish Mavuduru – Frisco Emerson HS \nStudent Speaker: Cadet Chris Troncoso \nCadet Troncoso was the outstanding cadet in our 2024 Sam Johnson Scholarship program\, and today is a rising junior enrolled in the Army ROTC program at the University of Oklahoma.  He recently completed the prestigious and difficult Army Air Assault School and earned the coveted Air Assault Badge.
