SUMMARY:Military History Book Club – October 2026
DESCRIPTION:South of Heaven My Year in Afghanistan\nPlease arrive by 7:15 a.m. to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $20.  Discussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThe discussion will be guided by: LTC (Ret) Carl D. Wiley: USA\, (Ret). \nCarl is a combat veteran of Desert Shield/Storm\, the Gulf War\, Operation Joint Endeavor\, who retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and Government Civil Service after 40 years of service. \nIn late 2005\, casualties in Afghanistan remained just above one hundred\, while media coverage largely focused on the thousands of American soldiers killed in Iraq. Reports on the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan were infrequent. Within a year\, Daniel Flores would witness the resurgence of the Taliban and experience personal loss among his fellow service members. He faced sustained combat against a determined adversary in one of the most volatile and contested regions of the Hindu Kush\, operating his Apache helicopter under challenging conditions. \nSouth of Heaven presents a detailed account of Flores’s year-long deployment in Afghanistan. One of his missions was highlighted in a segment on the Military Channel’s My War Diary\, featuring the rescue of an American convoy in the Tagab Valley. Footage captured by Flores during the actual engagement was utilized in the program. His final week in-country tested both his faith and that of his daughter as she awaited his safe return home. \nThis memoir was later adapted into the award-winning film “Above the Best.” \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club – November 2026
DESCRIPTION:In the War Room: Israel vs Hamas & Iran\nPlease arrive by 7:15 a.m. to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $20. \nDiscussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThe spirited\, interactive discussion will be led by Bob Epstein:  Texas Guard- 19th Military Police Brigade; Law Enforcement Reserves (20 years); National Security Task Force Chair – Military Order of World Wars.  \nIn the War Room is the inside story of the leaders\, debates\, and decisions that shaped Israel’s longest war—a multifront battle that eventually led Israeli and then US jets to the heart of Iran. This book also explains the current debates in Israeli society and the clashes or cooperation with US presidents that may shape the future of US–Israel relations\, beyond the current government\, for those who want to understand what will come next. \nLed not merely by a team of rivals but by a war room of bitter enemies\, Israel fought back from the October 7 massacre all the way to Tehran. To do so\, the Jewish state had to defy the world and the expert predictions that claimed Israel’s strategy would lead it to calamity. Israel did fail at times\, especially in Gaza\, and it lost significant public support among Americans. But Israel succeeded enough to set back the Iranian proxy axis substantially. \nDrawing from their unique access to top Israeli and US officials\, including secret intelligence sources\, Bob and Kaufman reveal how Israel came back from its lowest moment to outmaneuver Iran in late 2024 and 2025\, leading to their greatest confrontation yet in 2026. \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com
