SUMMARY:Military History Book Club – September 2026
DESCRIPTION:Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution\n  \nPlease arrive by 7:15 a.m. to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $15. Discussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThe discussion will be guided by: COL USA (Ret) JP Hogan: AUSA Leadership Education Fellow \n  \nOn the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, law professor\, legal analyst\, and bestselling author of The Indispensable Right Jonathan Turley explores how the unique origins of American democracy set it apart from other revolutions\, whether it can survive and thrive in the 21st century\, and how the unfinished story of the revolution will play out in a rapidly changing world. \nThis is a book about revolutions. Most countries are the progeny of revolution. At the birth of this nation\, the Founding Fathers faced the quintessential question of self-governance: how do you keep democracy from devolving into violent anarchy or brutal despotism? Drawing on little-known facts from the founding\, Jonathan Turley reveals how the United States escaped the cycles of violence and instability that plagued other democratic movements\, from ancient Athens to 19th-century France. \nAs the nation approaches a new era marked by artificial intelligence\, robotics\, and profound economic shifts\, America must again withstand the pressure of radical forces that seek to curtail our natural liberties under the guise of popular reform. In this crisis of faith\, many politicians and pundits are questioning the very principles of American democracy\, and some law professors are even calling for scrapping the Constitution. \nSynthesizing sources from history to philosophy to the arts\, Turley offers a hopeful account of how the lessons of the past can guide us through today’s “crisis of faith” in democracy and see us into the future. He notes: “From redcoats to robots\, our challenges have changed. Yet\, we have remained. Our greatest danger is not forgetting the history detailed in this book\, but forgetting who we were in that history.” \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com \nINSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club – July 2026
DESCRIPTION:Prestonwood CC\, 15909 Preston Road\, Dallas\, TX. \nPlease arrive by 7:30 am to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $15. \nDiscussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThomas Woloszyn – Colonel Tom Woloszyn\, USA\, Ret. retired after a 30-year Army career and recently retired from the Department of the Army where his last assignment was the Civilian Deputy of Dugway Proving Ground\, Utah. Tom is a specialist in Nuclear\, Chemical\, Biological weapons Radiological Defense officer and an Army strategist. \nThere are many books on the Iraq war and on WMD-type issues\, but this is the first to offer a historical overview of chemical-biological defense issues and a policy analysis of how the U. S. government addresses the threat of weapons of mass destruction and how ground forces deal with the problem on the battlefield. Al Mauroni looks at how the 9/11 disaster forced the Department of Defense to review its management of chemical\, biological\, radiological\, and nuclear (CBRN) defense equipment and then make significant changes. He outlines in detail the government’s decision to invade Afghanistan and Iraq and search for WMDs. The fact that no such weapons were found\, the author explains\, has had dramatic consequences for how U.S. military forces address the use of nuclear\, biological\, and chemical weapons in Iraq and how they support the federal response to terrorist incidents involving these weapons at home. \nMauroni draws on two decades of experience in the area of chemical-biological defense policy to present this comprehensive analysis of the decision-making process within the Department of Defense and the actions of U.S. forces in the second Iraq War. Explaining that WMD is no longer a useful term for the threat faced by military leaders and emergency professionals\, he also outlines a number of lessons learned from the conflicts in the Middle East and offers recommendations on how to improve CBRN defense for the future. This book is published with the cooperation of the Association of the United States Army. of the invasion plan and its subsequent execution from D-Day in March 2003 until the change of command of operations in Iraq and the departure of Third Army in June 2003. \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com \n \n  \nPurchase Book on Amazon:

DESCRIPTION:Expectation of Valor: Planning for the Iraq War\nPrestonwood CC\, 15909 Preston Road\, Dallas\, TX.\nPlease arrive by 7:30 am to order from the menu. Tom is a specialist in Nuclear\, Chemical\, Biological weapons Radiological Defense officer and an Army strategist.“Expecta)on of Valor is a master class in opera)onal planning and high-level staff work. It is a must-read for field grade officers and planners of all services. It also will reward any reader interested in the mechanics of large-scale conflict.” ― ARMY Magazine \nGiven the length of -me the United States spent in Iraq\, there is a percep-on that there was no considera-on before the war of what should be done a=er coali-on forces arrived in Baghdad and removed Saddam Hussein. However\, as this unofficial history reveals\, there was a great deal of planning to address how to achieve the policy objec-ves for Iraq set by the Bush administra-on. Kevin Benson—director of plans for the United States Third Army\, the ground forces command headquarters for GEN Franks’ Central Command\, at the start of the war— details the development of the invasion plan and its subsequent execu-on from D-Day in March 2003 un-l the change of command of opera-ons in Iraq and the departure of Third Army in June 2003. \nHe addresses the persistent trope that “the Army did no planning” for “Phase IV\,” revealing that extensive plans were proposed\, and were met with very little interest in Washington. The book covers the difficulties encountered in dealing with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld\, from getting his approval on the number of forces requested to conducting the campaign to find the\n“smoking gun” of WMD; the instructions given to Army\, Marine and coalition forces; and the daily secure video teleconferences with Central Command and the Pentagon\, and the rather\nremarkable conversations and guidance that came from these meetings. \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com \nPurchase on Amazon: Expectation of Valor: Planning for the Iraq War

SUMMARY:National Defense Briefing Series – Jun 2026
DESCRIPTION:Shootdown and Rescue of Basher 52\nTHE STORY OF SCOTT O’GRADY’S 6 DAYS ON THE GROUND IN BOSNIA\nSpeakers – Scott O’Grady and T.O. Hanford \nOn June 2\, 1995\, Captain Scott O’Grady’s F-16 was shot down over Bosnia during NATO Operation Deny Flight\, and for six days\, he evaded Serbian forces in a masterclass of survival. On June 8\, Captain T.O. Hanford\, nearing the limit of his fuel and defying orders to return to base\, flew his F-16 deep into hostile territory and picked up a faint radio call from O’Grady that sparked one of the most daring rescue operations in modern military history. \nOn the 31st anniversary of this epic rescue\, NDBS is honored to present a special program featuring both Scott O’Grady and T.O. Hanford in a rare joint appearance. While they have shared their perspectives individually over the years\, they rarely appear together to tell the full\, synchronized story of the pilot on the ground and the one in the air who refused to leave him behind.  We have also invited representatives of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit\, who conducted the rescue operation\, for an unprecedented three-way discussion of this historic event.
